On Friday, July 17, 2009, the Caribbean island nation of Aruba will become an environmental leader when they stop filling their landfills with municipal waste and begin recycling it, using Wastaway® technology. A newly built Wastaway Aruba facility will divert and process up to half of the island’s municipal solid waste.

In 2002, Aruba’s landfill was nearing capacity, but because the island is landlocked, options for dealing with the garbage that comes from the tourism industry and from their own citizens were limited. In 2004, Aruba built a new landfill out of necessity, but its lifespan was only five years, and the nation began a new initiative called “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Restore.” They also began a worldwide search for innovative ways to environmentally secure their island.

WastAway fit their profile. A small company based in the United States, Wastaway had developed and patented an innovative process for converting municipal solid waste into an environmentally-safe product called Fluff®. This process had been successfully tested by the US military and had been commercially proven in Wastaway’s hometown of McMinnville, Tennessee, where the process was used to recycle more than 90% of Warren County’s municipal solid waste. Additionally, residents of Warren County did not have to sort their garbage and recyclables, but were able to use a single garbage receptacle, since the Wastaway process eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming garbage segregation.

A formal ceremony to dedicate the new WastAway Facility in Aruba will be held at the Solid Waste Management Facility in Parkietenbos. “This will be an historic day, both for Aruba and for Wastaway,” said Mark Brown, Wastaway’s President and CEO. “Aruba gains an environmentally sound solution to their landfill problem, and Wastaway premieres its first international facility.”
